And here's the Seattle Times' review:
While most of its peers ended up as fodder on CD compilations of '80s effluvia, Duran Duran, one of the decade's defining pop acts, continues to toward edgy new territories. This time the trio enters some vaguely futuristic world known as Medazzaland.
While Duran Duran eschews the well-crafted pop of Rio for a largely pretentious foray into electronica, electric pop has always been the group's metier. The new single "Electric Barbarella" is basically a catchy rewrite of 1981's "Planet Earth". The atmospheric tunes "Michael (You've Got a Lot to Answer For)" and hauntingly dramatic "Out Of My Mind" are keepers.
Yet Duran Duran isn't always adept at mixing its jarring electronics with indelible hooks, and the sound mix is terrible, so this '90s version of the group, while adventurous, isn't likely to be remembered as fondly as it once was.
That's what the producers of the multi-artist Duran Duran tribute CD hope, anyway. On this ridiculous collection, ska and punk groups - including Goldfinger, Bjorn Again, Less then Jake and Riverfenix - update classic DD hits in cheesy fashion. -- Howard Cohen
