Duran Duran: Medazzaland

Compared to Duran Duran's 1995 album, Thank You - which featured atrociously laughable versions of songs by the Doors, Led Zeppelin and even Public Enemy - Medazzaland is a return to form. It's even more of a comeback when you consider that the whole record was recorded without original member John Taylor. Not content to luxuriate solely in 1980s nostalgia, the band has crafted songs that draw elements from electronica, Prince-inspired funk and Bon Jovi-style power pop, and blends them into a fizzy, alcohol-free cocktail.

For the most part, it works. Songs like "Big Bang Generation" and "Electric Barbarella" sizzle and pop, even if they lack the epidemic catchiness of "Hungry Like the Wolf" or "Girls on Film". Still, when Duran Duran lapses into sentimental dreck mode, as on the sappy ballads "Michael (You've Got a Lot To Answer For)" and "Midnight Sun", the band is more noxious than the whiniest Depeche Mode. A mixed blessing. -- Jon Wiederhorn
