DURAN NEWS

VH1 had an All-80s Weekend on March 14/15.

This included the "Then and Now" show hosted by John Taylor (god of beauty and love), as well as all 80s Pop Up Videos. There's more info to be had at the VH1 website. Also, on the Comedy Channel on March 18, check your local listing for Saturday Night Live--they're airing the 1983 apprearance by Duran Duran. Mark those calendars and program your VCR!!!

From a UK news site: Supermodel Yasmin Le Bon has revealed the secret of her happy marriage to pop star Simon - a good row. Twelve years after they wed, Yasmin, 33, told FHM magazine: "Not a day goes by without Simon and I having a massive row about something. And we love it, because 10 minutes later we are in each other's arms laughing, saying: 'That was great, wasn't it?"' The mother-of-three has posed for raunchy photographs in the best-selling men's magazine.

Anyone watching the February 19 broadcast of the Motown 40th anniversary special caught a tiny shot of Nick. Before you panic, it was just an old clip from the "We are the World"'s grammy acceptance, and who should be presenting the award but Sheena Easton and a very large haired Nick.

There is an article about Duran in the February issue of the KRBE (Dallas) magazine, The 104 Zone. For more information, or to get a copy, e-mail Shannel at Shannel305@aol.com

Here is Duran's official statement regarding the "split" between the band and Capitol Records.

"It is mutually agreed between Duran Duran and Capitol Records that we wish to end our relationship. However terms are still under negotiation, and we will of course update you as soon as final decisions have been made as to the further International release of MEDAZZALAND and other Duran Duran products. We appreciate your concern and support."

- DURAN DURAN

It's official Duran Duran has left Capitol! The follwing article was on Billboard Online....

Duran Duran Splits From Capitol

After more than 15 years and a dozen albums, Duran Duran and Capitol Records have decided to part ways, sources say. The band's last album, "Medazzaland," entered and peaked at No. 58 on The Billboard 200, spending only three weeks total on the chart. Although Duran Duran will not deliver future albums of new material to the label, there is talk of Capitol releasing a Duran Duran B-sides compilation.

John performed at the Sundance Film Festival Thursday, January 22. Earlier in the month, he was in the studios, rehearsing "Hold Back The Rain" for his performance. For more information, there's a little write-up on the newstand section of the b5 page under sounds.

Apparently Duran was on a San Francisco TV show called First Cut, which aired Saturday the 24th at 4pm on Channel 4 (KRON). They are doing a feature on 80s bands and supposedly DD is being interviewed for it.

Over at: http://www.metaverse.com/vibe/sleaze/00latest.html, Cybersleaze, the figurehead of reliable Internet journalism, has this to say about John:

"SPEAKING OF AMANDA DE CADENET: Did anyone else catch her former DURAN DURAN hubby JOHN TAYLOR on that VH-1 special about bands of the 80's?? I just gotta say that he was looking really, really FINE. Yum. Especially considering that his fellow former bandmate SIMON LeBON has been looking pretty long in the tooth of late. Gotta give Taylor his props for still looking as great as he did in his prime with the Duranies. And having ditched his ridiculous 80's hairdos he is actually looking even better..."

FYI: The Amanda mention was just a note that she was at the premiere of Great Expectations.

Nail Polish Corner Part III: The EB Hard Candy nail polish for men:

Apparantly, Hard Candy are still working things out with Duran, and now they have it scheduled to be out with their Spring Colors Collection. And it will be a big Duran promo thing, as far as they are concerned (or at least that's how they put it). So look for Electric Barbarella nail polish in the spring. Any guesses what color it will be...?

A U.S. jukebox only 7" has been released for 'Electric Barbarella' (5:19) with a B-side of 'Out Of My Mind'(4:20). Catalogue number for the 7" is S7-724381972175. No picture sleeve, just a plain white sleeve.

For a list of 1997 Tour Dates

Bits and pieces of the LA tribute concert will be available for viewing on duranduran.com as soon as it's up and running, which should be by the 2nd week of January, 1998. Now, this *is* Duran we're talking about, so deadlines are always extremely flexible! But according to Nick, he said at the LA show on December 9 that the site would be up and running *for sure* in 3 weeks, so set your watches...

TV Mania's record label, Nick and Warren's LoFi Records, will be having their own web site, but not until the next year. And some bands that will be on LoFi are going to be some of Warren's solo stuff and some of Anthony Resta's stuff, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

Simon apparently caught strep throat during the tour, and says that he had to get penicillin injections before the Sacramento show on December 6th. So it was penicillin he was on during that show, in case anyone was wondering...

 A NEW DANISH DECADE

Duranies living in Denmark (and possibly all of Europe) will be treated to 4 extra videos in their new copies of the DECADE video. Included was Serious, Violence of Summer, Ordinary World and Come Undone.

Duran on Viva Variety Christmas Show

Be sure to watch Comedy Central in December for Viva Variety, the parody of European variety shows starring the comedy troop formerly known as The State. Duran will be the musical guest on their Christmas Show (probably showing towards the end of the show.) Click here for times and more info

 ATLANTA DURANIES:

SIMON AND YASMIN AT A UK CHARITY SHOW

Simon and Yasmin took part in a charity concert Thursday 4 December at the Manchester Cathedral in Manchester, England. The charity is Henshaws Society for the Blind. You can email Lesley for more info.

ICM and Billboard have DD's Essentials collection listed for a Jan. 27th release.

Syn Studios, the Japanese based company owned by Duran Duran's Simon LeBon and composer Nick Wood, have been chosen to score and write new songs for the upcoming Mario Van Peebles film, LOVE KILLS.

While Japanese-based Wood does the main composing, LeBon is writing new songs for the film. As LeBon tours with Duran Duran, he and Wood operate long distance, and compile material for director Van Peebles via the ISDN Musicam CODEC. The duo, via their association with Film Music Associates, plan on working on other film scores this year.

Electric Barbarella has moved up to #31 on Casey Kasem's Top 40 Chart. It was #36 last week.

Electric Barbarella has debuted on Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 Chart at #36 this week.

Duran Duran's Electric Barbarella is the 50th most played song in the states according to Radio Airplay. Last week it was at #63.

VH-1 has "Electric Barbarella" as their featured video. So apparently there are one or two of you out there who like itŠ

M2 is playing "Electric Barbarella", but not regular MTV though. (Maybe ol' Kurt isn't on M2! -bitchy ed. note)

There was a small interview with Simon aired in October 18's Fox Network news reports. Not much was revealed, although Simon said he watches the Discovery Channel. He also said the song "Michael, You've Got A Lot To Answer For" is about a friend of his, and he looked kind of shy and did not elaborate. Note that he did not say it was written about John.

Duran were on CNN's Talk Back Live, aired October 16, 1997. The topic of the show was teen violence. Issues such as how music and television effect teens today were discussed, and Duran were brought on as the Rock Star panel. See our Duran articles section in Issue #24 for the full transcript. Duran were also live on the CNN program Guestsource the week of October 10 as well.

Duran did an in-store record signing on October 15 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Virgin MegaStore in Times Square (45th and Broadway).

Warren and Simon did an interview the morning of October 15 on New York City's WHTZ Z100 FM. They said it was too early for Nick. (Not gonna commentŠ -ed. note)

Duran did an AOL chat on Friday, October 10 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Recent Duran television appearances in promotion for Medazzaland: The Tonight Show with Jay Leno October 9; Vibe TV (on the UPN network) October 10; and The Rosie O'Donnell Show, October 14.

Rolling Stone On Line has a review of the Tribute Show as well as a picture of Simon. See Issue #24 for the full text.

In response to the few who are interested in another, "Fan" Tribute Album: something like this has already been thought of and is currently being worked on by an independent label called "Panda Pop". They're currently looking for bands to send in tapes for their tribute album. Check out their web site: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Chewtoy/pandapop.htm

 Nail Polish Corner, part II:

There was a small feature in the News Of The World (UK) on October 6 about Duran launching their range of make-up for men. Amongst the products is Electric Barbarella Nail Varnish. And this small feature was found recently on the 'net: POLISHED BAND -- When Duran Duran releases its new CD Medazzaland October 14, will the '80s-born pop band also be busy pushing nail polish? New York Magazine says negotiations have just begun to launch three groovy nail colors with former Teenbeat magazine pinups. The first, Electric Barbarella, is named for the album's first single. The Durans, half of whom have married models, appear to have no problem with the product's feminine image. "We've had the last 10 years of dark misery," says keyboardist Nick Rhodes. "Makeup for men is always looked at in a strange light. But I look at it as totally pop."

This was found in the October 7 CyberSleaze: WE ALWAYS KNEW THEY WERE CLOSET DRAG QUEENS QUOTE OF THE DAY: "There's nothing strange about it - men want to look good as much as women do." - DURAN DURAN guitarist NICK RHODES (yes, we know, we know, but it's CyberSleaze, for God's sake, what did you expect, the New York Times? -ed. note), famous for prancing around in pink lipstick in the 1980s, explains the reasoning behind the band's newly launched line of cosmetics. Their first beauty product will be Electric Barbarella nail varnish, which is also named after their new single.

Go to this URL for very interesting information about an upcoming Duran Duran documentary being filmed. For readers with no Internet access, see our Duran Articles section in Issue #24 for the full text.

 Magazine and Newspaper Sightings

Readers in the UK who purchase the Scream 2 issue of Rolling Stone (with Tori Spelling on the cover) will get a great collectable: a free CD which includes UNDERGOING TREATMENT!

There's a few snippets and a very funny bit or two in the latest issue of some magazine called ROCKLOVE. There is also a review of the Tribute show on their website.

Duran and their eternally forthcoming nail polish are mentioned in the December issue of US Vogue.

Duran have a good review in the December issue of Musician Magazine.

The January issue of Keyboard magazine has a great Duran article, dealing mainly with Nick but not entirely. There is a little blurb about THE video with some interesting quotes like:

"It's really quite simple. we don't turn into robots. She doesn't get empowered. It's completely sexist and we're getting alot of shit for it, but I don't fucking care."--Simon

"My motivation was to do everything with her on video that I wouldn't do if she was really in my home....I certainly wouldn't waste time having her vacuum, and, I wouldn't be sharing her with two other guys."--Warren

Oh, and Nick says lots of interesting things about analog synths.

There's an article about Duran in today's Fashion section of the Toronto Star newspaper. It is about the special promo party that was held in their honour at the FX clothing store on Nov. 17.

Look for a bit about Duran and Medazzaland in the upcoming issue of XY Magazine, which is sort of like Seventeen geared for gay teenagers.

Yasmin appears in December issue of Elle UK, in editorial where famous people dress as characters of fairy tales. Naturally, Yas is the Wicked Witch/Queen of Snow White ( nice hair, something to copy for Christmas parties!!!) and she's also in one Dorothy Perkins ad.

Yasmin is in the December 1997 issue of Glamour, page 250 - there is an article about models dressing in velvet clothing, and a photo of her (with Simon partially visible behind her).

Duran are in the Novemeber issue of ONE WORLD magazine.

Look for reviews of MEDAZZALAND in upcoming issues of ENTERTAINEMENT WEEKLY and PEOPLE Magazine.

In the latest Rolling Stone (Nov. 27, 1997) there is a photo of DD at the Tribute show with a small article about it (in Random Notes, I think). It's kind of a bad photo and won't reproduce well - harsh light & dark shadows. Still, it's a photo. There is also a big section all about technology, and they are mentioned once in the section about digital music, and then again in another small section later, and they have the Liquid Audio screen with the album cover & "Electric Barbarella" in the title thingy.

There is an interview with Nick in the November issue of Interview.

The issue of Yeah Yeah Yeah (issue Number 9 with Radiohead on the cover) has an interview with Warren. It's about a page and a half and there's a picture of Duran from the EB video and a very tiny fuzzy picture of Warren sitting.

A Brief review of Medazzaland is featured on page 57 of the November US Magazine (no picture.) It's pretty good too!

There are articles on Duran in the latest (November, most likely) Request magazine, and this week's Newsweek.

Keep an eye out in the month of November for SMUG Magazine's Duran Duran cover story! In-depth interviews with Simon, Nick, Warren and JOHN with exclusive photos of all four guys. SMUG's Duran Duran story has been in the making for over a year: it exposes the heart, soul and business of the men of Duran Duran. [This one's a keeper]. ASK YOUR LOCAL MAGAZINE NEWSTAND OR BOOKSTORE TO ORDER IT or CALL SMUG AT 212.388.1739 AND WE'LL HELP YOU FIND IT or email SMUG NYC. Haven't heard of SMUG? Billboard Magazine calls it "New York City's highest profile indie-rock photo zine." Be among the first to buy it as it goes national!

The issue officially hits the streets on 11/24; though some places (& subscribers) will have it a week early. The Mag will stay on the stands until Christmas.

You have a couple of options for getting your hands on the Duran Duran issue. You can:

  1. Go to your local magazine store or Barnes & Noble and look for it. If they don't have it, ask them to order it from their distributors.

Duran Duran is in a special edition of a Brazilian magazine called "ShowBizz" this month. This "special edition" has translationed lyrics in Portuguese... in this magazine, there is a beautiful Duran original members photo and there are a phrase from each band... Duran´s phrase is the following: "Pretty and Fantastic Boys."

The October 7 issue of USA Today had a story in the Life section on downloading music with a few quotes from Nick. There's also a photo of the band.

Nick has a page (no photo) in the current Interview (with Cherlize Theron on the cover) talking about the Liquid Audio download availability. There's also a letter at the front from someone "Duranting and Duraving" about the Medazzaland review a few issues back, which I'm sure you all will remember was really mean-spirited.

Has anyone seen a new magazine called Mike? If you see it, the premiere issue has a two-page interview (picture too) with Duran Duran.

Be sure to check out the November issue of Detour magazine (with Ethan Hawke on the cover, due on newsstands October 15). It features an interview with Nick, who sarcastically says of the departures of John Taylor, Andy Taylor, and Roger Taylor: "It took us 17 years, but we finally got rid of them all." Funny, ha ha...

Hello! Magazine from the week of October 7 has a big article and front cover picture of Gail Elliots' wedding (she's some supermodel Yasmin is apparently friends with), at which Yasmin and all three little LeBon kiddies were bridesmaids. There are lots of nice photos of the girls, and two of Simon, where he looks very quietly dressed, except for some food he spilt on his lapel. (This is just too easy to comment on, so I'll leave it alone -bitchy ed. note) Simon is only mentioned as being Yasmin's husband in a photo, and not listed in the text as being a celebrity guest. Can anyone say diss?
